Hack the Hood
is looking for a Communications & Outreach Manager who can to take our efforts to the next level. We’re looking for someone who can balance strategy, creativity, clarity, and productivity. We want someone who can code switch for our various audiences, while at the same time always maintaining integrity and holding our mission and dedication to youth as paramount.

The Communications & Outreach Manager will be responsible for promoting Hack the Hood’s work and prompting action from youth, small businesses, technology professionals, non-profit partners, donors, and other stakeholders as we continue to grow as a regional organization. This position will help develop a strategic communications plan that supports program and fundraising objectives, and creatively engages our audiences via web, advertising, social media, email, presentations and more. The successful candidate will report to and partner with the Development Director, and work closely with many members of our growing team. We see the person in this role as the steward of the brand and voice of Hack the Hood across platforms, including written content, social media, newsletters, videos, and various graphic design projects. Our ideal candidate knows how to get the most out of Facebook, Twitter, and other popular platforms, but understands how different audience segments interact with information around web, mobile, and on the ground.

This is a full-time “hands-on” position, with opportunities to grow. The winning candidate will be a self-starter, collaborative, primarily working from our office in Oakland.


Marketing and Communications:

Work with the Development Director on developing a strategic communications and fundraising communications plan to authentically communicate the story of Hack the Hood in ways tailored to our diverse audiences - but always centering young people of color. Inspire people to get involved as participants, mentors, volunteers, donors, and partners.
Conceptualize and implement creative multi-channel, multi-media campaigns in response to program and fundraising needs of the organization. Quickly develop pithy, targeted materials or recruit others to produce content for our website, blog, social media, and email blasts.
Define the “voice” of Hack the Hood, and help others in the organization understand and communicate in a way that is consistent with our brand. Organize internal communications systems. Coach and train other members of the team so our communications stay unified and “on message” and use consistent visual branding.
Effectively use our infrastructure for effective segmentation and message targeting.
Use, find, or develop tools for measuring impact of communications. Develop monthly reports of online and social media metrics and use them to improve conversion rates.
Support packaging and storytelling around qualitative and quantitative evaluation data.

Individual Giving: Work with the Development Director to develop cycles of individual donor fundraising campaigns via bulk mail, social media, and other platforms.
Sponsorship: Support fundraising efforts by helping create supporting collateral for pitches, etc.

Support our program and fundraising events through online promotion, graphic design, and more

Develop materials to promote story ideas to the press
Field press inquiries and pull in the appropriate staffer when called for

Other Management
Prepare reports for the CEO, COO, Development Director and board to update them on communications and individual fundraising progress
Help staff maintain up-to-date information regarding program accomplishments so that grant and other communications are accurate.
Other duties as needed

3-4 years of relevant experience.
Experience working in a for-profit education company, edtech startup, or fast-paced non-profit
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or similar, OR relevant work experience and portfolio
Knowledge of nonprofit, tech, and/or start up communications. Mix of corporate and nonprofit experience is a plus. Experience with individual donor campaigns is a plus.
Portfolio of successful campaigns

Superb written, verbal, and visual communications skills
Creativity and Sense of humor
Strategic thinker: Compulsive problem solver and dedicated storyteller
Ability to prioritize
Excellent project management skills and ability to proactively work towards a deadline. Experience using Trello, or similar project management and communication tools a plus.
Experience with video production desired, some experience with graphic design required
Understanding principles of segmentation and segmentation strategy, and technical proficiency working in a CRM like Salesforce to effectively manage lists that support targeted communications.
Comfort with Mailchimp (or similar CMS and mass mail tools)
Familiarity with Classy or other integrated crowdfunding/fundraising platform
Must have experience using social networks and analytics/measurement tools to assess their impact: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Expertise with Snapchat and LinkedIn desired.
Comfort with start-up environment. Ability to pivot quickly when needed. Ability to remain focused and motivated in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work across teams on multiple projects- managing up, down, and to the side.
Personnel and volunteer management experience.
Awareness of shifts and trends in the field
Comfort with Google Apps, & Adobe Creative Suite
Comfort and/or desire to work with very diverse team based in Oakland, CA
