Description & Details
Aspire Education Project seeks a Director of Programs with a blend of academic acumen, program management experience, educational brilliance, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Aspire Education Project was founded as a nonprofit in the fall of 2005 in order to bring high quality academic support to students who do not readily have access to private tutoring and other educational programming. We exist to increase educational equity and outcomes in the Bay Area by serving all students with excellence. Thus, while 85% of our revenue comes from our fee-for-service work, approximately 50% of our clients are from low-income families. Aspire works through three program areas:

Tutoring We harness the power of tailored one-on-one assistance to meet our students’ academic needs. We have created a sustainable platform for scholarship tutoring that enables us to work with students from the full range of the socioeconomic spectrum, and we maintain a team of 45+ experienced educators who reflect the diversity of those we serve.

Programs & Partnerships We partner with local schools and educational organizations to help students, particularly from low-income households, succeed on the SAT, ACT, and regular academics, thereby increasing equity in our increasingly unequal education system, and in college admissions.

Community Reading Buddies Through this summer enrichment program, Aspire addresses what we believe is a taproot of educational inequality: the shortage of foundational literacy support to low-income preschoolers. Community Reading Buddies empowers the youth we work with during the school year to become educators themselves during the summer, facilitating one-on-one reading across Oakland. The program simultaneously builds kindergarten readiness, literacy skills, and youth leadership. It also brings together local youth from every background to work together on the common project of equity for the next generation.

Aspire Education Project is seeking confident and capable Director of Programs to oversee the first two program areas: Private Tutoring and Programs & Partnerships. The ideal candidate will be academically oriented and accomplished, entrepreneurial, responsible, hard working, and share our mission to change lives through educational equity. The Director of Programs will report to the Executive Director, work on cross team-projects with other Directors and Managers, and be assisted by a Program Coordinator.

1) Program planning and execution: The Director of Programs will be director and decision maker in all programming for our clients and tutors, and will act as liaison and point of contact for our institutional partners (Boys & Girls Club, Oakland Unified, etc.). In short, with assistance from the Program Coordinator and Executive Director, the Director of Programs will oversee all aspects of client management including client services, program design and execution, and evaluation, ultimately creating and stewarding successful academic relationships to serve over 700 students per year.

2) Human Resources: The Director of Programs will have primary responsibility for screening, hiring, cultivating, and developing Aspire Education Project's team of top educators. Building partnerships with likely sources of candidates, evaluating and hiring teaching staff, and designing and conducting regular trainings will be staples of the work of the Director of Programs. Proven academic accomplishments will be integral to these functions.

3) Intellectual Property: The Director of Programs will expand and maintain Aspire Education Project's curriculum. In collaboration with the Executive Director, this position will also create and maintain internal process documents, job descriptions, and other materials.

The ideal candidate will possess most or all of the following skills and experience:

Teaching and Pedagogy

At least two years varied experience in teaching, tutoring, education, and/or youth programs with students in our target age range (13-18) is required. Experience teaching or tutoring the ACT, SAT, and other standardized tests is highly valued. The position will be an especially good fit for former teachers, tutors, and education-related program staff. Educational acumen in high-school math and science a must.

Management and Leadership
