Vehicle Overview
Introduction
A phenomenal engine such as the 2010 BMW M5's race-bred 500-horsepower V10
is typically enough to win enthusiasts over. Look at the muscle car era, for
example -- its beloved icons are little more than enormous V8s strapped to
the bare minimum in rubber, sheet metal and suspension bits. In the realm of
super-sedans that cost close to $90,000, though, the stakes are considerably
higher, and the M5 turns out to be not so super after all. Yes, that V10 is
a thing of beauty, but the M5 is otherwise missing too much of the expected
BMW DNA to earn our recommendation.
The problems start with the mandatory variable-assist and -ratio steering,
which is a member of BMW's "active steering" family -- a dirty phrase in the
eyes of 3 Series and 5 Series enthusiasts, who tend to avoid these
newfangled systems like the proverbial plague. Driving the M5 is a reminder
why. There's so little of BMW's trademark steering feel here that it could
be mistaken for electric power steering, and the variable ratios sometimes
feel out of step with driving conditions. This is a passable setup by the
standards of mere automotive mortals, but when we see M badges on a car's
trunk lid, we expect more.
Then there are the two transmission choices, neither of which is
particularly palatable. The standard seven-speed sequential manual gearbox (SMG)
is a single-clutch automated manual -- a dwindling breed in this era of
slick multiclutch gearboxes. In fact, BMW now has a dual-clutch unit of its
own in the M3, but the M5 soldiers on with the old-school SMG. On the bright
side, SMG will rip off spine-tingling rev-matched downshifts all day long.
Upshifts, however, are never smooth, and they usually involve unseemly
lurching -- particularly at low city speeds. A six-speed manual transmission
can also be specified, but it overheated in a test car we had a few years
ago, and it also comes with a non-defeatable stability control system, which
is befuddling in light of the M5's super-sedan identity.
Lest you conclude that we've been pounding steins full of M5 haterade, hear
this: In most other respects, the 2010 BMW M5 is a stupendous car. As noted,
the 5.0-liter V10 pumps out an otherworldly 500 hp, and it sounds as good as
it goes, particularly as the stratospheric 8,250-rpm redline approaches.
There are no fewer than 279 different vehicle settings according to BMW,
which means you can fiddle with the M5's power, throttle, transmission and
suspension settings to your heart's delight. The incredibly supportive and
comfortable seats are quite possibly the best all-around automotive chairs
in the world. Even the newly hard-drive-based iDrive is something to brag
about now, thanks to an updated interface and menu structure that are
actually intuitive and useful for a change.
Without a doubt, the M5 is one of the planet's most capable super-sedans.
And upon its debut, we thought pretty highly of this latest M5 icon. But
with more time under our collective belt, we've become more attuned to its
decidedly un-BMW-like shortcomings. And overall, we think there are simply
better choices. Sizing up the field in this loosely defined segment, we'd
rather have Mercedes-Benz's C63 AMG or E63 AMG, Jaguar XFR, BMW's own M3
sedan or even the Cadillac CTS-V. Porsche's new Panamera is another
impressive contender. Here's hoping that the soon-to-be-redesigned 5 Series
yields a properly lust-worthy next-generation M5.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2010 BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the midsize 5 Series luxury
sedan. Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels, performance tires,
adaptive xenon headlamps, front and rear parking sensors, M-Sport settings,
auto-dimming mirrors, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, a
power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, heated front seats, power sport
seats, front-seat memory, leather upholstery, the iDrive electronics
interface, a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice commands,
Bluetooth and a 13-speaker surround-sound system with a CD player.
Options include soft-close automatic doors, keyless ignition/entry,
fold-down rear seats, upgraded power front seats, a power rear sunshade and
manual rear side shades, extended leather trim, ventilated front seats,
heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, an upgraded
sound system, satellite radio and an iPod interface.
Powertrains and Performance
The rear-wheel-drive 2010 BMW M5 is powered by a scintillating 5.0-liter V10
that pumps out a maximum 500 hp at 7,750 rpm and 383 pound-feet of torque at
6,100 rpm. Interestingly, the full 500 hp is only available when selected by
the driver using the MDrive performance settings; the default setting is 400
hp, the same output as the previous M5's V8. The standard transmission is
the seven-speed sequential manual gearbox (SMG), a single-clutch automated
manual that can be placed in a fully automatic mode or operated manually via
the gearshift lever or steering-wheel-mounted paddles. A conventional
six-speed manual transmission is a no-cost option.
In performance testing, we've clocked the SMG-equipped M5 from zero to 60
mph in 4.8 seconds, while a manual-equipped car accomplished the same feat
in 4.7 seconds. Estimated fuel economy, should one care, is an expectedly
poor 11 mpg city/17 mpg highway and 13 mpg combined with either
transmission.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2010 BMW M5 includes stability control,
full-length side curtain airbags and front-seat side airbags. Rear-seat side
airbags are optional. The government slapped the structurally similar BMW 5
Series with a disappointing three out of five stars for driver protection in
frontal crash tests, but a perfect five stars were awarded for front
passenger and side-impact crash protection. The Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety gave the 5 Series its top "Good" rating in frontal-offset
crash testing, but side-impact testing was a mixed bag: The 5 Series without
the optional side airbags scored a second-worst (of four) "Marginal" rating,
while adding that option brought the score up to "Good."
Interior Design and Special Features
The M5's interior is tightly constructed with high-quality materials, and
there's enough room in the backseat for a couple adults to ride all day in
comfort -- not bad for a car with this much performance potential. The newly
revised hard-drive-based iDrive system is finally an infotainment interface
to be proud of thanks to additional physical buttons around the control knob
and a new menu structure that just makes a lot more sense.
The standard 16-way-adjustable front seats are excellent in their own right,
while the optional M multifunction seats are some of the best chairs
presently for sale in terms of support, comfort and adjustability. However,
the M multifunction seats' active side bolsters, which move inward to brace
front passengers against cornering loads, can be distracting at critical
moments. We'd advise you to turn this feature off and leave the adjustable
bolsters at your preferred setting. The trunk's luggage capacity -- likely
not the M5 shopper's top priority -- is a decent 14 cubic feet.
Driving Impressions
The 2010 BMW M5's 5.0-liter V10 is a high-revving wonder of modern engine
technology, yowling its way to that 8,250-rpm redline with an exquisite
combination of ferocity and refinement. However, neither transmission choice
is appealing. The six-speed manual is certainly more rewarding than the
lurch-prone single-clutch SMG, but stability control is disappointingly
undefeatable on manual-shift M5s. As noted, the steering is oddly lacking in
feel and consistency for a BMW rack. If your heart's set on a BMW
super-sedan, we'd recommend taking a close look at the M5's little brother,
the more-enjoyable-to-drive M3 sedan.

Since its inception in 1990, Lexus has made a habit of producing quality vehicles that appeal to multitudes of luxury-segment buyers. A great example is the ever-popular RX-series luxury crossover SUV. Fully redesigned for 2010, the Lexus RX 350 doesn't stray too far from its successful formula of pleasant driving dynamics, a "just right" five-passenger size, a cabin full of luxury features and impeccable build quality.
Understandably, Lexus took a conservative approach when it reworked its bread-and-butter crossover. The tweaks made to this new-generation RX include a slight increase in width (though other dimensions remain essentially unchanged), bigger standard wheels (18s versus 17s), bigger brakes, a new six-speed transmission, more airbags (now at 10), a keyless ignition system and a new mouse-like multifunction controller for the navigation system that's actually both clever and intuitive to use. One downside to these new features, however, is that they contribute to the new 2010 RX 350's weight gain -- it's up more than 400 pounds compared to last year's model.
However, you won't need to e-mail the "Biggest Loser" to ask if they have a vehicular-themed show coming up -- the increased poundage hasn't marred the 2010 RX 350's performance. If anything, we've found the new RX to be more athletic than the outgoing model, thanks to sharpened steering and a revamped suspension. A new double-wishbone rear suspension setup not only improves handling but provides a little more cargo space behind the seats, thanks to its more compact design.
Compared to its competition, the 2010 Lexus RX 350 still serves as a fine example of what a luxury crossover SUV should be. Yes, those looking for sportier corner-carving machines would still be better served by the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Infiniti FX35. And those needing third-row accommodations should check out the Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz R350 or Volvo XC90. However, if you're interested in a plush, convenience-laden five-passenger crossover, it doesn't get much better than the RX 350.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2010 Lexus RX 350 is a midsize luxury crossover SUV that seats five. Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition and entry, 10-way power front seats, a power tilt and telescoping steering wheel, wood interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, a nine-speaker stereo (with a CD changer, steering-wheel-mounted controls and an auxiliary audio jack) and second-row seats that slide and recline.
Options include a number of packages. The Sport package adds 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension and Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. The Premium package adds leather seating, a sunroof, a power rear liftgate, driver seat memory settings, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an iPod input/interface. Selecting this package allows further upgrades via the Comfort package (heated and ventilated front seats, bi-xenon adaptive headlights and rain-sensing wipers) and the Luxury package (19-inch wheels, retractable outside mirrors, upgraded leather seating, a side-monitoring system, a wood and leather steering wheel, extendable front seat cushions). The Navigation package (requires the Premium package) includes a hard-drive-based navigation system with real-time traffic, a back-up camera, Bluetooth and upgraded speakers.
Individual options include park assist, a premium Mark Levinson surround-sound audio system, a dual-rear-screen DVD entertainment system, a head-up display and the Pre-Collision System (which primes the brakes and tightens the seatbelts if a collision is deemed imminent). Many of the various package features are also available à la carte.
Powertrains and Performance
A 3.5-liter V6 rated at 275 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque powers the 2010 Lexus RX 350. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and buyers have a choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Lexus claims either version will run from zero to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds.
Fuel economy estimates stand at 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined for the FWD model, with the AWD version rating 1 mpg less. Properly equipped, the RX 350 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Safety
The RX 350 comes standard with no fewer than 10 airbags, which include front- and rear-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and dual front knee bags. Standard stability and traction control systems as well as antilock brakes with brake assist are on hand to help one avoid an accident in the first place.
Interior Design and Special Features
Although the RX 350 is an entry-level luxury SUV, the cabin gives the impression that this could be the company's flagship. Real wood and high-quality leather trim make for a rich ambience, and the optional Mark Levinson sound system rivals the best systems available anywhere. In addition to voice command capability, the optional navigation system employs Remote Touch, a new interface that replaces the former touchscreen setup with a mouse-like controller located on the center console. Remote Touch is immediately intuitive and generally easier to use than interfaces offered by the RX 350's competitors.
Rear passengers will be quite comfortable thanks to the seat's reclining and sliding adjustments. That seat is split 40/20/40 to optimize both passenger comfort and cargo-carrying flexibility. When it's time to turn this luxury cruiser into a beast of burden, the RX 350 is ready with 40 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats up and 80 cubes with those seats down.
Driving Impressions
In true Lexus fashion, the 2010 Lexus RX 350 possesses a smooth and sophisticated personality. Acceleration is swift and silent, thanks to the 3.5-liter V6 and quiet cabin. This is first and foremost a luxury vehicle, and as such, the standard suspension is tuned more for a plush ride than sporty handling, though it never feels the least bit floaty. Those seeking a firmer dynamic should consider the Sport package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension along with 19-inch wheels fitted with performance tires. Even fitted with the latter, however, the refined RX 350 still leans more toward an isolated ride than an enthusiast-oriented, involving drive.

Testimonial from a buyer...
To whom it may concern. I want to state for Bryan my absolutely positive and unforgettable experience purchasing my dream car ......
I purchased a few weeks ago a 1965 Mercedes 230SL from Bryan Shisler and VIP tuning.
While I had been trying to find this car for a long time, at no point have I had the opportunity to deal with someone like Bryan who has made this deal beyond easy.
I'm based in New York and the car was based in San Francisco which had all the ingredients of a complex transaction, mostly because I was purchasing a car which was 45 years old.
Bryan gave me a completely thorough review of the car beyond what I would have ever expected. He spent a lot of time talking to me by phone over several conversations helping me to understand every detail on the car. He gave me the right advise and description of the car, its strengths and all its weaknesses.
Bryan drove several hours over the week end to bring the car to one of my close friends to test drive and give it an over all inspection.
I have since then received the car, and all elements described by Bryan were absolutely accurate.
I would with no hesitation do business with Bryan and recommend his expertise and dedication to his customers.
Congratulation Bryan, you are able to turn a dream into a reality.
Hope to see you soon when I come on the west coast ...
And yes ... My little 230SL is a sweet little driver as you promised.
All the best ...
Jean-Marc
TESTIMONIAL of a person that we sold a car for under consignment.

It was through word of mouth within the local exotic car family that we learned of Bryan Shisler’s VIP Tuning Auto Consignment Sales service. We were looking to sell our Ferrari and knew we needed some help with setting the price, photographs, marketing, advertising and qualifying buyers, just for starters. Bryan and his staff delivered all of this and so much more!
We found VIP’s service professional, consultative and invaluable. Not only did he market our car beautifully with amazing photographs and a descriptive copy, but he also secured multiple buyers within weeks. We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of our transaction.
Thank you again, VIP Tuning!

I just wanted to thank YOU for doing such a great job selling my '69 Camaro Pro Street. It was refreshing working with a professional who honestly knows his business. The ability to express my needs, then back out of the picture, and have confidence that all will be handled with expedience and integrity. I appreciate your recognizing what needed to be done, from the professional pictures to your time detailing the Camaro, which helped close the sale smoothly for both of us. I will be proud and confident to refer you to others wanting to sell their automobiles. Bryan Shisler of 'VIP Tuning' YOU are truly the MAN...... Thank You ! Sincerely, Larry Nichols West Coast Mobile 831-245-7082 TESTIMONIAL March 29, 2009 To Whom It May Concern:
I recently purchased a lightly used Lotus Elise Sport through Mr. Bryan Shisler of VIP Tuning Pro. I’m thrilled with the car. And I was thrilled with the whole purchase experience.
I first learned of the car through Bryan’s web advertising. Upon inspection, I found the car to be exactly as Bryan had described it. Virtually mint. We amicably and matter-of-factly agreed on a price. We had none of the usual back-and-forth price drama that is sadly so common in auto sales. Just a cordial two-minute discussion and a handshake. Done.
Bryan then used his industry contacts to line up a mechanical inspection by an independent dealer for the next morning. The dealer confirmed the car’s excellent condition. Moreover, Bryan was very generous with his own time, putting the car on the lift at his facility and carefully inspecting it with me. I got the sense that Bryan would have happily spent hours with me going over the car. Again, this inspection confirmed the car’s fine condition.
I’ve lost count of the cars I’ve bought over the years. So yes, I’ve had to interact with many car sales “professionals.” Bryan is different. In the course of our inspections of my Lotus, and in our subsequent discussions, I began to see that Bryan has a near encyclopedic knowledge of exotic cars and of high performance driving. And best of all, Bryan relays the information in a gracious way, without being at all pedantic or condescending. He’s a genuine pleasure to be around.
And the little things: He picks up his phone. He is punctual. And he follows through on his commitments.
I would not hesitate to buy from Bryan again. Thanks Bryan!
Sincerely,
Martin B. Los Altos Hills, CA

!DO NOT MISS THIS INCREDIBLE CUSTOM CADILLAC CONVERTIBLE !
NO MONEY WAS SPARED IN THIS PROJECT
 | Hall of Fame Builder is now taking appointments to view this Classic 50 Year Golden Edition 1952 Cadillac True Convertible that has been customized and restored professionally and not to destroy the famous original lines. Mild chop, custom padded top, soft touches of customizing, genuine Swedish leather, Rolls Royce rugs, air ride, heated lumbar seats, built in ice cooler, all new gauges and running gear. Candy brandy wine paint on a 100% flawless body. All chrome is show quality as is the entire car. This 4 year project took 5 Hall of Fame Builders helping to produce this piece of art with pride to achieve this perfection. $147,000 Frank De Rosa Customs & Auto Restoration | | |
|
As Seen in Rod and Custom Magazine August 2009 issue.
1952 Cadillac Convertible - The Golden Edition Frank De Rosa Spent His Life Planning To Build This Custom By Tim Bernsau Photography by Mike Chase Fans of the television show "Monster Garage" may remember an episode from about three years ago on which a team of top-level customizers built a '51 Cadillac convertible custom in five days and nights. That team included Frank DeRosa Sr. and Frank DeRosa Jr., father-and-son builders from Pittsburg, California. Since then Frank Jr. has completed another incredible Cadillac--this '52 convertible. This time, however, the project took a little longer--like a few decades. Frank Jr. grew up around the family auto shop, DeRosa Custom Auto Body, his famous father started 60 years ago. He remembers first seeing this Cadillac when he was a little boy. It belonged to the owner of a local bar, who had bought it new. Over the years, he continued to see it, and when he got older he began asking the owner if he would be willing to sell the car. He kept asking for ten years, with no success. After the owner passed away in 2000, his family agreed to sell the car to Frank. Several other people had tried to buy the car, he learned, but the family had decided to sell it to him because he had shown so much interest for so long. "The most memorable part of the restoration was right in the beginning," Frank told us. "Just being able to move the car from that garage to my shop was an amazing experience. Having the Cadillac in my shop and finally knowing it was mine had to be my favorite part of the whole process." Of course, that was just the beginning of the process--the physical process anyway. Frank had already spent years planning the build-up in his mind. There were many reasons he wanted to keep a lot of the outward appearance intact, including the fact that it was a one-owner car, the body was very straight and rust-free, it was a true convertible and it was a "Golden Anniversary" Cadillac (as Cadillac called the '52s). Frank did much of the build, with help from his father and others, including fellow Grand National Roadster Show Hall of Famers John Aiello, Marcos Garcia, Dick Falk, and Bill Reasoner. Most of the stock chassis was restored and modified with air bags from Air Ride Technologies at both ends. Power comes from a GM factory-direct 330-horsepower small-block--dressed up to keep up with the style that's all over the rest of the Cadillac. That includes the interior, where every mechanical component and every bit of material was selected for excellence and appearance. Of course, none of that makes any difference if the car didn't make an excellent first impression. "The first thing everybody notices is the incredible paint," says Frank. The Candy Brandy Wine shows flawless sheetmetal, the result of hours of effort by the owner. The Carson top was the hardest part of the job, he said, especially since it was the most important part of keeping the silhouette correct. The chopped top and dropped stance create the illusion of a section job, but the body is uncut. Frank told us a story about the Cadillac that his father told him during the build-up. In 1953, the original owner brought the car into Frank Sr.'s shop with a scratch on the fender. Fifty years later, while sanding down the paint, Frank Jr. uncovered the red oxide primer his dad had sprayed while making the repair--probably the first work ever done to this Cadillac. "I have to say that this is the greatest custom that has rolled out of our shop, and my family has been in the business since 1949." Maybe he's biased; after all, he's had his eye on this Cadillac since he was a boy. Then again, maybe he's absolutely right. Either way Frank's not about to rest now; he's looking towards the future and says he'll most likely have to sell the "Golden Anniversary" Cadillac that he'd wanted for so long, in order to make room for the next project to roll into the family shop.
1952 Cadillac Convertible - The Golden EditionRod & Custom Feature Car Chassis Frank's Cadillac rides on the frame it was born with. A pair of Fatman spindles with Cadillac discs lowers the altitude by 2 inches in the front. The rear frame was C-notched and the stock suspension was rebuilt with a few leaves removed and blocks added to get the rear down. Air bags from Air Ride Technologies are used all around to drop the Caddy for fairground cruising and give it the floating-on-a-cloud ride these Cads are famous for. A Chevellepower steering box was added for easier turning. Drivetrain The engine compartment was finished immaculately and Joe Lamont packed it with a brand new Chevy small-block, rated at 330 horses and dressed to kill. Induction comes from a single Holley 750 on a polished manifold, topped with a polished billet air cleaner. The billet valve covers match the air cleaner cover. Custom headers and stainless pipes run the exhaust to a pair of glass-pack mufflers. The polished brass radiator from US Radiator keeps the engine running cool. A new 700-R4 transmission was installed and the stock Cadillac rearend was rebuilt. Wheels & Tires In keeping with the traditional custom theme Frank was after, he selected a set of 15-inch Kelsey Hayes wire spoke rims from Wheel Vintiques, dressed up with Cadillac emblem caps and wrapped up with 7.10-15 BFGoodrich wide whitewall tires. Body & Paint The most noticeable exterior components are the chopped top and the paint. Well-known customizers Frank DeRosa Sr. and John Aiello built the custom Carson top, and Aiello and Frank Jr. chopped 4 inches from the A-pillars. Bill Reasoner did the cutting on the side windows from U.S. Glass. The door handles were shaved, seams molded and hidden, and the hood profile was mildly rounded, but the full bumpers and trim pieces remain, with the brightwork restored by Sherm's Custom Chrome Plating. Dick Falk created the custom molding, in particular the custom metallic scoop trim on the rear quarters. After hours of careful metal finishing on the body, Frank Jr. sent the car to Marcos Garcia at Lucky 7 Custom Shop in Antioch, California, who shot the Candy Brandy Wine, a custom mix of House of Kolor paints. Interior It may not be all '52, but it's mostly Cadillac stuff on the inside of the car. The seats are from an '05 Eldorado and feature lumbar support and heat. Gregg Philbrick at Contra Costa Vinyl in Pittsburg covered them with high-quality hand-selected Swedish leather done in traditional tuck `n' roll; each roll was stuffed by hand. The leather extends to the door panels. The carpet is Rolls Royce material. Even the trunk was treated to leather and RR carpet. The center console holds controls for the Vintage Air A/C system (installed by Frank, along with Larry and Lloyd Selph) and the stereo, as well as an ice box for refreshments. The dash is stock, with gauges restored by Red Line Gauges and contemporary polished billet air vents. The steering wheel and tilt/telescoping column are from an '85 Cadillac. A Pioneer CD/DVD player with Rockford Fosgate amps and Punch subwoofers was installed by Brian Hohman. The Ron Francis wiring kit was installed by Antioch Muffler. We can sell your car... Some info on the company that built this car. American Custom Coachworks was the largest company custom coach builder in the USA. While they built a number of stretched limousines and utility vehicles, mostly for oil-rich Arabs, the bulk of their business was in converting steel-topped coupes to convertibles. They worked exclusively for Ford, Cadillac and Lincoln-Mercury dealers. It took about six weeks to make the conversion; this required removal of the top section as well as some restructuring, including reinforcing the windshield and door pillar posts. Today they manufacture Cadillac and Lincoln limousines and sell directly to Corporations, Casinos, Hotels, Companies, Limousine Services, Private Individuals, Heads of State, Royal Families, Movie Studios, and Celebrities.
The 1978 Sedan De Ville was upgraded in many ways including; Redesigned grille, slim vertical tail lamps inset into chrome bumper end caps with built-in side marker lamps (Cadillac would retain this "vertical tail lamp inset" design feature for many years, including Deville through 1999, and Fleetwood through 1996). Inside was leather upholstered seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.
