San Francisco Performances presents:

Pianist Angela Hewitt in concert

Tuesday, December 1, 8:00pm-10:00pm, San Francisco

MORE INFO: http://www.performances.org

San Francisco Performances brings back celebrated pianist Angela Hewitt for a recital featuring Bach's Partita No. 2 in C minor and Partita No. 1, in B-flat Major as well as Schumann's Davidsbundlertanze,Opus 6 and Sonata in G minor, Opus 22.

Known for her magnetic musicianship and precise technique, Hewitt is a renowned Bach specialist. Completed in 2005, her 11-year project to record all the composer's major keyboard works has been described as "one of the record glories of our age" (The Sunday Times) and she has been hailed as "the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time" (The Guardian).

Her recordings of Bach's complete solo keyboard concertos with the Australian Chamber Orchestra made the Billboard charts in the United States, and were named Record of the Month in Gramophone magazine. The first of a series of CDs featuring the music of Schumann was released in November 2007. Beyond that, Hewitt's vast discography includes CDs of works by Granados, Beethoven, Rameau, Chabrier, Messiaen, Ravel, Chopin, and others.

In July 2005, Hewitt launched her own Trasimeno Music Festival in the heart of Umbria in Italy. Now an annual event, it offers seven concerts over seven days featuring Hewitt as a recitalist, chamber musician, song accompanist and conductor, working with both established and young artists of her choosing.

Born into a musical family (her father was the cathedral organist in Ottawa, Canada). Hewitt began her piano studies at age three and during her formative years also studied violin, recorder and classical ballet. At nine she gave her first recital at Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music where she later studied. She then went on to study with French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa.

Named Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006, Hewitt was awarded the first ever BBC Radio 3 Listener's Award (Royal Philharmonic Society Awards) in 2003. She has lived in London since 1985 but also has homes in Ottawa and Umbria.

"What is Utopian becomes... the commitment to imagining possible Utopias as such, in their greatest variety of forms." - Fredric Jameson, 2005

The world is far from perfect; this we know. Yet dreams of perfection surround us. Why is it that we can't help dreaming of a world without inequity, a world in which tyrants find themselves transformed into saints and everyone has enough to eat?

The Utopian Spirit animates novels and revolutionary manifestoes, separatist enclaves and cultural gatherings in the high desert. One might even go so far as to say that it is a defining characteristic of modernity. But as the macropolitics of the new world order make it increasingly difficult to imagine radically different futures, we are beginning to see new manifestations of utopian desire: modest eddies of local autonomy in the global flow of hegemonic power.

Mark Tribe is an artist and occasional curator whose interests include art, technology, and politics. His artwork has been exhibited at Toronto's Trinity Square Video, New York's Park Avenue Armory and Moscow's National Center for Contemporary Art.He has organized curatorial projects for the New Museum of Contemporary Art, MASS MoCA, and inSite_05. He is the co-author, with Reena Jana, of The Port Huron Project: Reenactments of New Left Protest Speeches (Charta, 2010), and New Media Art (Taschen, 2006). He is Assistant Professor of Modern Culture and Media Studies at Brown University, where he teaches courses on digital art, curating, open-source culture, radical media, and surveillance. In 1996, he founded Rhizome, an organization that supports the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology. Market Street Gallery presents Artist John F. Melvin

Friday, November 20, 6:00pm-9:00pm, San Francisco

MORE INFO: http://www.marketstreetgallery.com

Market Street Gallery will be hosting an artist reception for artist John F. Melvin, a San Francisco painter who works in the impressionistic style.

Melvin's newest series of 15 large-scale portraits came about because of his love of painting women. To Melvin, their grace, form and beauty coupled with their feminine personalities create an inspiring subject for the artist.

The young mothers in this series are all well educated and outspoken. Most have careers yet they remain focused on their children. Each has an interesting story, some that are sad but all inspiring.

To develop each piece, Melvin begins with a photograph and an interview of the sitter, creates a sketch and then proceeds to the painting. Using loose brush work and a palette knife, he develops a portrait with many abstract features. Some of these are quite representational while others, following in the footsteps of Matisse and Soutine, employ facial distortion for emotional effect.

The visual impact of seeing all the works exhibited together is particularly enjoyable as each portrait has its own personality yet is influenced by all of the others nearby.

Currently, Melvin serves as the chairman of the board of Artspan, a non-profit organization supporting
the visual arts in San Francisco, and has worked previously as an investment banker.

A Salon for Artists with Blanche Brown, Charlotte Gordon, and others

Saturday, November 14, 7:00pm-8:30pm, San Francisco

MORE INFO: http://www.ciis.edu/News_and_Events/Event_Calendar/Carolyn_Cooke_Salon.html

Please join CIIS' Department of Writing, Consciousness & Creative Inquiry (WCC) for "A Brief History of Consciousness: A Salon for Artists with Blanche Brown, Charlotte Gordon and Robert McDermott, moderated by WCC faculty member and fiction writer Carolyn Cooke.

How can literature and the arts explore and embody consciousness? This conversation with three artistic and intellectual luminaries will probe how origin stories, myths, archetypes and ecstatic revelations can uncover the material given to us as artists, feminists, activists and earth-changers in the postmodern present. From Buddha and Mohammed, from the bible to the Bhagavad Gita, Mohammed to the Virgin Mary, from Sarah and Hagar to William James, from Nigeria to Haiti, from the spirituality of Green politics to the spiritual dimensions of radical art forms, this lively conversation will attempt to map the evolution of human consciousness while dismantling the political constructs of East and West, old and new, and expand boundaries of what we know about race, class, gender and sexual orientation.

The awakening ethnic consciousness of the late 60's propelled BLANCHE BROWN into an in depth study of African-American Culture and the possibilities of movement, from afro-Haitian, ballet, jazz, folk dance and tap. After graduating from San Francisco State with an emphasis in Dance, she worked with the Wajumbe Performance Ensemble, including African based dance forms in her repertoire. CHARLOTTE GORDON has published two books of poetry. Her biography of the 17th century poet, Anne Bradstreet won a New England Book Award for non-fiction. Her latest book, The Woman Who Named God retells the famous Biblical story of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar. Her Rebel Highness: The Official Public Debut!

Friday, November 13, 8:00pm-9:30pm, San Francisco

MORE INFO: http://www.herrebelhighness.com

"Her Rebel Highness", a fully choreographed musical act with three female vocalists, dancers, 18th century costumes, baroque-pop songs and theatrics, makes its debut on Fri., Nov. 13 at J'LaChic Theater 39 at Pier 39 in San Francisco.

The show's central theme is empowerment and founder Velia Amarasingham explains, "A significant part of the inspiration for this piece comes from all of the independent and career-focused women I have met since moving to the San Francisco Bay Area from Sydney, Australia, more than 10 years ago."

This inspiration has evolved into a new production that stars a soul singer, a mezzo soprano and a pop vocalist who take on the personas of rebellious 18th century princesses, determined to break out of their stereotypes and to take control of their destinies. Two modern dancers complete the line-up and to complete the concept, the music transitions from baroque to pop as the princesses reveal more and more of their modern attitudes.

Amarasingham says, "I have made the transition from artist to entrepreneur and attribute my female peers who have set wonderful examples." It's no wonder San Francisco ranks higher than any other American city for women's entrepreneurship, according to the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women.

She adds, "Her Rebel Highness is for all of the avid Masterpiece Theater fans who, like myself, are simply dying to see an 18th century heroine break out of her tiresome state and take charge. We shan't disappoint!"

The evening will begin with guest performances by burlesque dance troupe, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang and magician Heather Rogers.

Cine+Más SF’s debut of The San Francisco Latino Film Festival (November 5-25, 2009) arrives in theatres, museums and cultural centers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area spanning four cities over three weeks. Building on the traditions of the former SF International Latino Film Festival, Cine+Más SF scope will encompass Latino arts beyond film to include other visual, performance, and literary arts. Cine+Más SF contributes to the Bay Area’s active and diverse arts scene through its signature event, the San Francisco Latino Film Festival, year-round programming and special events.

The SFLFF program includes award winning and critically acclaimed documentaries and feature films from Argentina, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the USA.

The festival will open with SPOKEN WORD by Victor Nuñez. This drama revolves around a young San Francisco based poet and spoken word artist that heads back to New Mexico upon learning of his father’s illness leading him face his conflict ridden past.

A short list of standout films include: 389 MILES by Luiscarlos Davis, award winning documentary about life along the Mexico and Arizona; THE WATERCOLORIST by Daniel Ro a feature from Peru about a man who decides to follow his passion as an artist; HERMAPHRODITE by Albert Xavier- a feature film about gender identity out of the Dominican Republic inspired by a true story; FINAL IMAGE a documentary from Argentina by Andres Habegger about a Argentine cameraman gunned down at the hands of the Pinochet regime in the ‘70’s and the journalist that pursues justice; NESIO from Mexico by Alan Coton, a feature about small time criminals scraping by in the margins of Mexico City; MEET THE HEAD OF JUAN PEREZ by Emilio Portes from Mexico, a black comedy involving a circus, a magician and a guillotine; FORGOTTEN INJUSTICE is a powerful documentary of a little known part of American history involving the mass deportation of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the ‘30’s by first time Mexican-American filmmaker Vicente Serrano.
The festival will close with two award-winning comedic dramas: GIGANTE by Argentine filmmaker Adrian Biniez & LAST ONE FOR THE ROAD by Mexican director Eva Lopez-Sanchez. GIGANTE won the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Lion this year.
