Childbirth Preparation Workshop

There are many sensations that arise during labor and birth and many different ways of coping with them. Movement, breath, visualization and vocalization are all important and useful tools in the birthing process.

In this workshop you and your partner will learn:

~ Optimal fetal positioning and the importance of movement in childbirth. Couples will practice getting into different positions and doing exercises to help prepare mother and baby for labor and birth.

~ Various comfort measures including counter-pressure, light touch and massage. Couples will practice these techniques and learn what types of touch are appropriate and when to use them.

~ Hypnosis for childbirth; a brief introduction to hypnosis and how it can be useful and effective during childbirth.

~ Proven pain-coping practices; these practices help couples to develop a pain-coping mindset. Couples will be given time to practice and offer feedback.

About the Instructors:

Audrey Muto: Birthing From Within® childbirth educator, birth doula and yoga instructor. She also volunteers at Blossom Birth in Palo Alto and as a doula at San Francisco General Hospital. Visit www.myoyubirthandyoga.com for more info.

Deanna Mulder-Sauter: Hypnotherapist, HypnoBirthing® Childbirth Educator, Birth Doula, Massage Therapist, Reiki Practitioner and natural soap maker. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Birth Ways in Berkeley as part of the Baby Fair Committee. For more information visit www.deannasauter.com

Both Deanna and Audrey regularly teach childbirth preparation classes (individually and together) and attend births. They both view birth as a rite of passage and strive to inform and empower women and their families during the child birthing year.

My daughter desperately needs a type O kidney

posted: November 22, 2009, 03:59 AM

Replymaryalpha@yahoo.com

WE DESPERATELY NEED....IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: A KIDNEY DONOR WITH "O" BLOOD TYPE

HELLO EVERYONE!

My daughter Maliya Bucknor-Smartt is desperately in need of a kidney from a donor with "O" blood type and would be grateful for your kind consideration.

Her kidneys failed suddenly in September 2006. She was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure/ Membranous Nephrotic Syndrome. The cause of this failure could not be determined. She has been a non-drinker, non-smoker, non-drug user all her life, and had never been ill or hospitalized before this traumatic and devastating experience.

She has dialysis treatment three days a week, four hours each treatment. The stress of dialysis is excruciating; she gets sick and nauseated all day after dialysis and has to stay in bed. Long-term hemodialysis has been found to seriously compromise patients' heart health and life expectancy. She has been hospitalized twice for related complications since her kidneys failed. Only the miracle of living donation will save her in a timely manner.

Maliya is my only daughter, and I am appealing to you kind people out there to please be tested to see if you are compatible to save her.

I would have donated my own kidney as soon as she was well enough to undergo surgery, but unfortunately, I am not a match. Her brother (who's her only sibling), is not a match either. Her father died in 2004.

The fear of the catheter for dialysis access failing because of blockage and infection is constant. This has happened to her twice. Getting a timely transplant will relieve us of this fear.

She is on the transplantation waiting list at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center. She is asking for your help because it is not as easy for a kidney patient with type "O" blood to have access to cadaver kidney as it is for others. The kidney patient with type "O" blood has to wait the longest for a cadaveric "O" kidney. The wait time is 7 years.

She was just in the process of making important plans about her future when this disease struck. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and an Associate degree in Architectural Design Technology and was planning to get her Master's degree in Computer Science when she became ill. She has not been able to work or study since. Your compassion will give her a second chance.

SOME PICTURES OF MALIYA BEFORE SHE BECAME ILL

MALIYA ON THE DIALYSIS MACHINE

My daughter Maliya is the kindest, most generous, and most loving person you could ever hope to know and I personally would be very grateful if you could restore her health.

She danced and performed for years while she was in college and since graduating. In fact, she was rehearsing for a dance production here in San Francisco when her kidneys failed. She would love to dance again.

She would love to marry and raise a family. Right now, she is afraid to hope. Your gift of a new life will restore her hope.

NO GENDER OR RACE RESTRICTIONS

Donation can be made across ethnic and gender lines.

She needs as many type O volunteers as possible to undergo evaluation by UCSF because even people with this blood type can be medically disqualified because of other incompatibilities.

We will be eternally grateful to all of you, extraordinarily generous and compassionate men and women, willing to restore her life by volunteering to be tested so you can donate to her.

University of California, San Francisco has been performing living donor transplants since 1963 and uses laparoscopic technique for kidney removal. This involves small incisions that do not require cutting any muscles.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), more than 90,000 living donors have donated kidneys since 1998 in the USA. Source: Renal and Urology News

FUNDS FOR TRAVEL, RECUPERATION, ETC.

“Direct financial reward” is illegal in the United States, according to The National Organ Transplant Act of 1984. However, her insurance will cover costs of donors’ medical tests and surgery. The National Living Donor Assistance Center (NLDAC) provides money for travel and subsistence expenses for donors.

CONTACT UCSF TRANSPLANT OFFICE

To discuss your willingness to donate a kidney to Maliya, please contact UCSF Transplant office at (415) 353-1551.
Please ask the receptionist to connect you to the transplant coordinator. The office will send you a questionnaire, which is for medical evaluation. You can also contact me, Mary, at maryalpha@yahoo.com. I will help coordinate things.

HEALTHY HABITS ALL HER LIFE:

Maliya has always maintained a healthy, wholesome lifestyle. Her desire to recapture a zestful life remains strong. Please help us! We are counting on you. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
MARY BUCKNOR-SMARTT

MESSAGE FROM MALIYA:

Thank you so much for your compassion in considering me. I am more grateful than you will ever know. If you grant my wish for a new kidney, I will take the best care of your life-saving gift.

Yours sincerely,
MALIYA BUCKNOR-SMARTT

11/22, Potluck and screening of the final two parts of 'Rethink Afghanistan'

Peace Action of San Mateo County presents:

Potluck and screening of the final two parts of 'Rethink Afghanistan'

Sunday, November 22, 5:30pm-9:30pm, San Mateo

MORE INFO: http://www.sanmateopeaceaction.org

The currency of the issue and our members' expressed level of concern at our last two events have both informed our decision to show the rest of the latest documentary film by Robert Greenwald, "Rethink Afghanistan." On Sunday, November 22 we will, as with our September event, begin at 5:30 PM with a potluck dinner, and follow with more of this remarkable film.

Back in September only the first few parts of the film had been released. Rather than wait, we chose to show what we had in order to bring the issue of the Afghanistan war to San Mateo Peace Action's front burner. Peace Action West Political Director Rebecca Griffin's October talk complemented the film's message with more details and suggestions for channeling our activism. On November 22 we will "finish watching" the film and have another open comment period - to hear from each other and further explore what we can do both individually and collectively.

Part 5 of the film is called "Women of Afghanistan," and raises questions about whether this war can, as advertised by many of its boosters, liberate or help Afghani women. Part 6, simply called "Security," features ex-CIA agents making the case that there is no victory to be won Afghanistan. We have thus far avoided showing a segment called "Civilian Casualties" because of its graphic images. All of the segments (and various fact sheets) can be found by logging on to www.rethink Afghanistan.com.

And on Sunday November 22, Beck Hall at UUSM will be the place to go to find community and share ideas coming out of the last three months of information we have tried to facilitate about the Afghanistan war. Please also bring a dish to share; beverages will be on hand for a donation, and coffee and tea will be as always complimentary. The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.
