Cybele Lyle, curated by Jacqueline Clay, on view October 30 – November 30, 2012 at Pro Arts’ gallery in downtown Oakland. The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue featuring an essay on Lyle’s work by Levi Barringer.

Cybele Lyle explores the language of architecture through photography, video and installation. For 2 x 2 Solos Lyle generates Shifting Spaces (2012), a structural intervention in the gallery that investigates time, emotional presence and queer identity. Similar to an open book, three gypsum board walls - or portals - project into the gallery space. The text of this "book" is splayed and sliced, intersecting the surrounding area. Complementing the larger sculptural work is an artist book Shifting Spaces (2012). Not easily or rapidly read as queer, Lyles' work requires audience members to come close, both physically and metaphorically, and insert their bodies into her ongoing investigation of space and subjectivity.
